Man arrested for leaving scene of fatal crash at Peoria

Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 4 investigation lead to the arrest of 35-year-old Shamarr A. Greenlee of Peoria, IL for one count of Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Injury Crash (Class 1 Felony) related to a fatal hit and run crash in Peoria.

​On July 23, 2026, at approximately 1:33 a.m., the Peoria Police Department (PPD) initiated a traffic stop on the suspect’s vehicle, but the vehicle fled. PPD did not pursue. The suspect subsequently struck a victim’s vehicle at the intersection of East McClure Avenue and North Central Avenue. The suspect fled the scene on foot. The driver and passenger of the victim’s vehicle were transported to a local hospital where the driver was pronounced deceased. PPD requested ISP conduct the investigation.

​ISP Special Agents, along with PPD Detectives, conducted a swift and thorough investigation, identifying Greenlee as the driver of the suspect vehicle. ISP presented its case to the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the above-mentioned charge was filed. On June 24, 2026, a Peoria County arrest warrant was issued. Greenlee was located and arrested by the Woodson Terrace Police Department in Woodson Terrace, Missouri. Greenlee is being held at the St. Louis County Jail pending extradition back to Illinois. There is no further information at this time.
