Residents of Chenoa voted down a public referendum question this week asking if the city should change its form of municipal government from a Commission form to a Strong Mayor form.
Under the current Commission structure, a mayor and four commissioners each have independent administrative responsibility for specific departments of the city. The new proposal has the mayor serving as the administrative executive with six at-large council members serving as legislators for the city, to be effective upon the election of a mayor and city council members in the consolidated general election to be held April 6, 2027.
If approved, the new form of government would have taken effect upon the election and qualification of the next set of officials.
As of late Tuesday night on Election Day, the unofficial results listed the “no” votes in Chenoa at 267 over the 108 “yes” votes with a total of 375 votes cast. This was with 100 percent of the precincts reporting.
