A 20-year-old Minooka man has died following a crash near Dwight in Livingston County Wednesday.

Coroner Michael E. Renner reports the accident claimed the life of Michael T. Roberson, 20, who was a college student traveling back to school. The exact time of the crash is under investigation but is believed to have been in the early morning hours. A cause of death is pending examination and toxicology testing.

State Police Troop 5 responded to the single-vehicle crash shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday which involved a vehicle submerged in the Mazon River south of N. 2400 East Road near Dwight. The Honda Civic sedan was reportedly traveling north on Old Route 66 when it crossed through the soundbound lane of traffic and into the west ditch.

“The vehicle traveled a couple hundred feet in the grass area along the guard rail and onto a concrete apron along the river bank and came to rest in the river on its top. A passerby noticed the vehicle in the water and dialed 911,” said a news release from the coroner.

An investigation continues by State Police Troop 5 and the Livingston County Coroner. Dwight Fire and EMS along with Odell Fire and Livingston County Sheriff’s Police were also called to the scene.
