Reunion marks 40 years at 'new' grounds

The Threhermen’s Reunion is still going strong after almost 80 years.

Pontiac’s annual Labor Day weekend tradition officially kicked off Thursday at the sound of the steam whistles.

“It’s just amazing that it’s still going on,” said Threshermen’s President Dave Herz during opening ceremonies. “There are so many things disappearing in life.”

Herz credits the show’s success to the countless volunteers involved.

This marks 40 years since the Threshermen’s Reunion moved to the current grounds north of Pontiac from 4-H Park.

Herz thanked the Caterpillar Corporation for partnering with the group this year as the theme is the Caterpillar Crawler machine.

Liz Vincent from Pontiac Tourism thanked everyone for their efforts in putting the event on each year.

“78 years is a lot to be proud of,” she said.

Vincent encouraged visitors to also enjoy all Pontiac has to offer such as the museums and other attractions. As Route 66 turns 100, exciting things are happening in the city’s downtown, according to Vincent. She reminded the crowd that Caterpillar earthmovers actually helped build Route 66 back in the day.

Steve Loveall from the Livingston County Board also addressed Thursday’s opening ceremony.

“It’s hard to believe this event started through one man’s vision,” Loveall observed.

He pointed to some things changing while others stay the same. Loveall thanked the Threshermen’s organization and members for the work put into the reunion to make it a success.

“Thank you for attending and I hope you enjoy your time.”

The 78^th annual Threshermen’s Reunion is happening through Monday at Threshermen’s Park along Route 23 north of Pontiac, featuring daily attractions, entertainment, food and field demonstrations.
