The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, National Traffic Highway Safety Administration, Illinois Department of Transportation and many local agencies are marking Illinois Speed Awareness Day on July 23.
Agencies across the state have been stepping up traffic safety efforts to reduce speeding. Motorists can expect to see increased patrols looking for speeding along with other traffic violations.
The campaign is an effort to address the drastic increase in speed-related crashes and moving violations. According to IDOT, speeding is involved in 44.9 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities, 36.3 percent of all injury crashes and 31.1 percent of all roadway crashes. This is based on 2023 Illinois crash facts and statistics.
Raising awareness and saving lives is the goal.
