Tucked among the holiday week hustle and bustle this year was a wild weather system that impacted the state Sunday.
An unusually warm morning led to a stormy day for many as severe weather swept across the region.
A radar-indicated tornado hit Pontiac and Clifton with damage reports from the west side of Pontiac near Caterpillar. Shed doors were blown off in Kankakee County and a roof was blown off of the Dairyland Seed facility in Gibson City following strong winds or a possible tornado there.
The morning round of storms caused extensive roof damage to Prairie Central Junior High School in Forrest with parts of the roof scattered across a nearby parking lot and the rest pulled back by winds.
Decatur reported tornado damage with multiple trees down and several homes substantially damaged. Mount Zion was also impacted after a tornado swept through that town with an extensive emergency response underway.
The National Weather Service is assessing damage from the Tremont and Pekin areas in Tazewell County to determine if a tornado or straightline winds caused damage. A post online from the Tazewell County EMA showed photos of debris tossed across fields along with structure damage.
